What to Bring to Your First Bridal Appointment (a Stylist's Checklist)
Bridal consultants can tell within five minutes whether an appointment will go somewhere. It's not about budget — it's about whether the bride walked in with decisions or with 800 saved pins and a shrug. Here's exactly what to bring so your hour actually produces a shortlist.
1. The right undergarments
A strapless bra (or adhesive cups) in nude, and seamless underwear. Most sample gowns are tried with clips and without proper support nothing hangs right — brides routinely reject perfect dresses over this.
2. Shoes at your ceremony heel height
Even approximate. Hem proportions, train drama and silhouette balance all change with two inches of heel.
3. Three to five reference photos — not eighty
Pick images that share a reason: "I love all of these because of the low back," not a mood-collage of everything pretty. If you can't name the reason, that's a sign you need a style decision before the appointment, not during it.
4. Your real numbers
Total gown budget including alterations (typically $300–$900 extra) and your wedding date. Consultants pull differently for a wedding in five months versus fifteen.
5. Venue and season, in one sentence
"Garden estate, early October, semi-formal." Fabric weight, sleeve options and train length all hang on this sentence.
6. One honest opinion-holder (not five)
Bring the one person who knows your taste and can disagree with you kindly. Groups of five average everyone's taste into no one's dress.
7. A one-page spec brief — the pro move
This is what separates a stylist-prepped bride from everyone else: a single page stating your undertone and shade of white (ivory vs. pure white), your silhouette direction (and why it suits your body), neckline and fabric candidates for your venue and season, and your no-go list. Consultants light up when they see one — it turns an hour of guessing into an hour of refining.
